HEAT PUMP COMPONENTS  &  SYSTEM DIAGRAMS FOR A TYPICAL SYSTEM

All Heat Pump systems basically consit of the same components. The difference from one system to the next is mainly the quality of the components and the electronics that control them. Each one of these major components will be discussed by most sales people so we feel it's important we help you to understand them. It's important to know that both the indoor and the outdoor units are "matched", meaning they are designed to work together. Building codes do not allow contractors to replace just one unit. The reliability of both the indoor and outdoor units should be considered. There's a lot of talk about what "Brand" is best. Each brand offers something a little different including the brands that are  made by the same corporation. Although all systems are basically the same, one Brand may be better suited for you than another.

The Copeland Scroll UltraTech 2-stage compressor is one of the most reliable compressors in the industry. So reliable that it carries a lifetime warranty in many systems. The UltraTech improves humidity control by 53% by modulating between the two stages -- 67% & 100% capacity settings.

Most EVAP coils are made in-house by the system manufacter. The materials used to build them vary -- some use copper tubing

while others are all aluminum.

Both have pros & cons.

SUMMER

The diagram to the left simplifies a typical slab-on-grade florida home. In the summer, when the thermostat calls for the system to cool your home, the controls activate the Compressor-(1) that is inside the Condensor (also refered to as the outdoor unit). The Compressor starts increasing the pressure of the refrigerant in the copper lines connecting the Compressor and the Evaporator-Coil-(3). At the same time the Blower-(4) in the Air-Handler and the Condensor-Fan in the Condensor are activated. In just a short time the super cooled refrigerant starts circulating through the Evaporator-Coil. Next the Blower begins to force cold air into your ductwork. As warmer moist air returns to the Air-Handler, it passes first through the Filter and then the super cooled Evaporator-Coil. The heat in the air is extracted and transfered to the refrigerant returning back to the outdoor unit. The moisture from the circulated air causes condensation on the Evaporator-Coil as it reaches its dew point. A pan below the Coil collects the condensation and is drained to the outside. The heat from the refigerant being circulated back to the Condensor is exracted by means of the Condensing-Coil-(2) and Condensor-Fan. The air inside your home is now being "conditioned".

WINTER

As the diagram indicates, two of the major components (2) & (3) take on a different role. The Reversing-Valve-(5) along with some of the other controls put things in reverse.  Now, instead of the outdoor unit helping to remove heat from the inside Evaporator coil, it now takes the roll of the evaporator. The outdoor unit's role is to extract heat from the outside air. The refigerant now transfers heat from the Condensing-Coil to the coil inside. The Air-Handler is now blowing lots of warm comfortable heated air into your ducktwork -- keeping you nice and warm !

Your Thermostat

There are some other essential components that can improve your comfort level and enhance the efficiency of any system you choose. Your Thermostat plays a huge roll in how your system operates. Two-stage systems take a different thermostat than what's probably in your home now. Less expensive models just have the basics. Better models are programable for 5 or 7 days of the week and typically a larger display. Some models can learn your habbits and can be operated from your smartphone. Our sales personel will discuss the options available for your needs and lifestyle. We'll also explain other essentials like Filters and Utraviolet Lights for ductwork maintanence.
